ASHLEY BENJAMIN, MD

Psychiatrist

Ashley Benjamin, MD, MA graduated from medical school at the University of Kansas and completed his residency at Wright State University/Wright Patterson Air Force Base.  His supervisory style is based on his 21 years of total service as an Air Force psychiatrist (Lt Col, Retired Reserve; including  8 years of active service), as well as his graduate assistant track coaching experiences at the University of Kansas (BA, Journalism) and The Ohio State University (MA, Exercise Science). As an adult psychiatrist, he has practiced in numerous settings including addiction, eating disorders, inpatient, day treatment, family medicine consultation, chronic mental illness, and sport performance psychiatry. He also was on faculty through the VAMC at Oklahoma Health Sciences where he taught psychiatric residents the art of psychodynamic psychotherapy. Because of his military and VA background, he is an expert regarding mental health symptoms post-concussion and is also certified in nutritional psychiatry and TMS.  These experiences have resulted in a holistic supervisory philosophy of using the least number of medications at the lowest doses to help each patient maximize their life performance.

In addition to his 30 plus publications in various areas of mental and non-mental health topics, he is the lead co-author of the book, The Student Athlete's College Recruitment Guide, which focuses on helping high school athletes find the best ethical, academic, and athletic fit at the college levelIn addition, he is a certified IGMCA Mental Game Instructor and Life Coach. He has won numerous awards reflecting a commitment to excellence and personalized patient care.

Specific Role with TLC:  Dr. Benjamin is available to provide consultations for patients who prefer to have their medications followed by their primary care provider. Because of his extensive background in multiple areas of psychiatry, his emphasis on holistic care including exercise, nutrition, herbal options, and mindfulness, he is also available for those patients who are seeking a second opinion.  Again, he will not take over a prescribing role.  TLC also has a very experienced and skilled PA-C (PA-C Kristina Lou) who does see patients and prescribe under the TLC consortium.  Dr. Benjamin consults with her very closely in a very collaborative manner as both are committed to excellent holistic care.
